ZUBBOO CARD CLUB

Spades

You and your AI partner. Two rivals. A full team match to 500.

Level 1Hand 1Novice rivals · Steady partner

Your bid

How many tricks will you take? Your bid joins your partner's contract. Nil means you promise to take none.

Nil scores +100 with no tricks, or −100 with any trick. Failed Nil tricks become bags and do not help your partner's contract.

Two teams, one deck

You sit opposite Otto, your steady AI partner. Mira and Nell are the rival team. These are three computer players, not online multiplayer opponents. Each full hand deals all 52 cards, thirteen to each player. Aces are high and spades are always trump. There is no passing.

The player left of the dealer bids first and leads the first trick; the dealer rotates each hand. Bid 0 (Nil) through 13 in turn. Follow the led suit whenever possible; otherwise play any card, including a spade on the first trick. The highest spade wins, or the highest card of the led suit if no spades were played. The winner leads next.

Spades cannot be led until a player uses one while unable to follow another suit. If you hold only spades, you may lead one before they are broken. Such a lead alone does not break spades. Play all thirteen tricks before scoring.

Contracts, Nil and bags

Your team's non-Nil bids form its contract. Meet it using tricks taken by non-Nil players to score ten times the bid, plus one point per overtrick. Fall short and lose ten times the bid. Nil scores +100 for zero tricks or −100 for any tricks; those failed-Nil tricks do not help the ordinary contract but each adds a bag and one point, even when the contract fails.

Ordinary overtricks also count as bags. Bags carry between hands: every ten costs 100 points, with the remainder carried forward. For example, a Nil player taking two tricks while their partner bids four and takes three scores −138: −40 contract, −100 Nil and +2 bags, before any carried-bag penalty.

After a complete hand, if a team has reached 500, the higher team total wins. A tie continues with another full hand. There is no early loss at a negative score.

Twelve full-match levels

Win with your partner to unlock the next level. Next hand continues this match; the Level button starts the next unlocked match. Retry returns to this exact match start and preserves unlocks. All selected starts have recorded team-winning paths against these fixed bots; your decisions can still lose.

Your partner stays steady throughout. Both rivals use novice strategy in levels 1–4, steady in 5–8 and expert in 9–12. These strategies differ, but their human difficulty has not been calibrated. Each AI sees only its own cards and public bids, tricks and scores. It cannot inspect your hand or its partner's cards.

Controls, AI turns and Practice Undo

Select a bid and confirm it. During play, tap a highlighted legal card. Tab moves between controls; Enter or Space activates them. Computer responses resolve after your choice, and their public plays appear in the current and last trick. There is no timer or automatic Next hand.

Practice Undo restores one of your decisions and all AI responses after it. Trying again may benefit from information you have already seen, so local results are not competitive rankings. Rules hints explain legality without revealing hidden cards or certificate paths.

Browser saves

Your match and unlocked levels stay in this browser only. Spades has no account sync or cross-device save. Clearing local data removes these saves.
